A: The fundamental principle of a bearing involves the placement of rolling elements, such as balls, needles, or rollers, between the inner and outer rings to facilitate smooth rotation of the shaft.

A: The load capacity is the amount of load a bearing can handle and is one of the most important factors when choosing a bearing. Bearing loads can either be axial (thrust), radial or a combination. An axial (or thrust) bearing load is when force is parallel to the axis of the shaft.

A: This depends on what you’re using the bearings for. Requirements for speed, load, temperature, noise levels, water resistance or food safety approval are just some of the factors you need to consider.

A: The best way to get an exact replacement is to give us the full part number on the invoice or despatch note that came with the original bearing. It is quite likely that you no longer have the paperwork. In that case, measure the bearing: the bore (internal diameter), the OD (outer diameter) and the width.

A: Yes. Full ceramic bearings have load ratings 25 to 35 per cent lower than steel bearings. As the material is much harder, it is also more brittle. Therefore, when put under too much pressure, ceramic material may crack while steel is more likely to suffer indentations.

A: Shields and seals protect the bearing from contamination such as dust and dirt. Shields keep out larger particles. Seals keep out finer particles such as dust.
